Angels function as God's servants whose duties are to assist her in the running of all the realms of existence. They appear as winged beings and command a level of respect from most of the deceased as representatives of God's power, and as such are free to travel to any realm of existence as part of their duties.

Who May Serve[]

The ranks of angels include God's original angels that she created prior to the creation of the universe, as well as former mortals who volunteer for the positions as part of their afterlife. For the latter, beings that had a strong sense of duty, including military backgrounds, religious piety and civil servitude, often feel a call to continue serving in Heaven. Anyone, no matter what their life experiences were, may volunteer for service in Heaven.

Angel recruits must go through a probationary period with direct oversight by a supervising angel. This includes combat training, emotional support training, use of tactics for diffusing dangerous situations and various tests of character. A final test gauges how angels will react in an unwinnable scenario and determines if they're qualified to be full-fledged angels. Those who pass typically serve in apprentice positions under a mentoring angel or angels, and after gaining experience can take on a mentorship position themselves with future rookies.

Hierarchy[]

Currently, the angels are led by Central, Highwing of the angels who works directly under God. She is responsible for assigning duties to subordinates, overseeing God's administration of life on Earth and preventing the actions of evildoers from getting out of hand. While she expects her angels to follow her orders, she allows them some leeway to disobey certain commands when it's for the greater good and also to explore various sections of the afterlife, including Hell, when they're not on assignment.

More experienced angels such as Reckonin take up positions of authority, including leading combat missions on Earth or Hell, supervising teams of angels in various Heavenly duties and providing training for potential angel recruits. Many of them provide mentorship roles for younger angels.

SupervisorAngel

Rookie angels are expected to follow the orders of senior management.

New recruits and relatively inexperienced angels, often called "young angels," make up the lower tiers of the order. Although fully capable of performing angelic duties and treated respectfully by their superiors, they're usually expected to take subordinate positions while on official duty and assist team leaders in their activities. Disobeying direct orders can lead to punishment, but exceptions will be made if such actions are proven to be for the greater good. Continued improvements and experience during this time will lead to young angels being trusted to take on more responsibilities and functions later.

RookieAngelNoNo

And for sure, rookies are never supposed to go into Hell without supervision. No siree.

Angelic Service[]

Their duties including bureaucratic positions in Heaven where they assist other righteous souls, acting to motivate the souls in Purgatory to retry life, keeping tabs on the living and intervening when supernatural activities from the damned get out of hand in either Hell or on Earth. To this end, they are trained in combat to directly fight those engaged in evil, as well as providing emotional support to those suffering from the effects of sin. All angels, no matter how experienced, are expected to conduct themselves professionally and provide assistance where and when they can.

An act of affection from an angel, such as a kiss, can have healing effects on those in need, both physical and mental depending on what kind of damage the being has received. Even a supposedly violent act like "slapping some sense" into someone can be seen as "tough love" and have a similar effect. Angels can perform healing kisses on any being in distress, including other angels. The effects can either be intentional with an angel deliberately kissing someone to heal them, or incidental if they're just showing sympathy to another being.

Angels often form strong bonds with each other while serving and act as colleagues, fellow soldiers and grief counselors to one another depending on the circumstance.

Many damned souls, especially the Sins, take delight in specifically targeting angels for assault due to their role as instruments of God's power, as it allows the damned to symbolically attack God. Many of the damned also hold grudges after being bested by angels in the past. Angels are aware they are at a heightened risk for attacks in Hell, and as such many adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward any aggressive being in Hell. Angels are free to use any means, including violence, to stop the actions of a damned soul that threaten themselves, colleagues or other potential innocent targets. Many experienced angels specialize in combat skills designed to "kill" the strongest denizens of Hell, such as Sins or other powerful Hellbeasts.

Directly affecting the lives of living beings is frowned upon and angels are expected to not interfere in the affairs of mortals to prevent violations of their free will, even if this inaction results in the death of innocents at the hands of evildoers. There are exceptions that force an angel's hand, such as when unnatural actions by Sins result in violations of natural order or the destiny of a soul. Also, some angels such as Central have been observed taking direct action that leads to the death of mortals, such as serial killers. Whether she is acting under Divine orders or taking the law into her own hands through vigilante actions is not clear.

Wings[]

One of an angel's most distinguished features are their wings, giant flight appendages resembling feathery bird wings that grow from their back and allow them to fly. They receive wings upon entering angelic service as recruits and keep them after successfully completing training. The presence of wings are what usually alert other deceased that the person in question is an angel.

WingTraining

Angels require training for flying, but controling them is more mental than physical.

Training requires learning how to mentally control wings, rather than physical. Angels use their wings in their service for ease of transportation during long journeys, to escape dangerous situations and for aerial combat. They may freely use them at any time, including casually when socializing or having fun, as God allows them free use of their powers.

WingsRemoved

Demonic beings will often target an angel's wings.

Most angelic wings appear as white with a yellowish hue, but some angel wings continue the color schemes of the fur pattern of their owners. Although divine in origin, they are an organic part of an angel's body and can be damaged just like any other body part. Many evil beings take great delight in mutilating or violently removing an angel's wings. The loss of wings in service is extremely painful and can be emotionally devastating to an angel but they can eventually be fully restored as the angel recovers.

"Life" of an Angel[]

Angels maintain their personalities from their time on Earth, carrying on any hobbies, interests and quirks they had in life as well as holding grudges, having anxieties and insecurities, including new ones they pick up while performing their Heavenly duties. They are free to visit the souls of loved ones the same as any righteous person residing in Heaven, but must forego having their own personal Heavens while serving as angels, instead living in a common area that functions as the main hub of Heaven.

AngelApartments

Angels live in a skyrise in Heaven's central city.

Angels are allowed to maintain relationships they've had in life while in Heaven, many of them still married or in other long-term relationships with their loved ones in the afterlife. Angels can also enter relationships with other angels they met in the afterlife, or with non-angel righteous souls residing in Heaven. Platonic friendships among angels are common due to shared duties and experiences, and most angels regularly get along with each other well, although arguments over goals and tactics spring up as well.

Angels are not immune to damage and pain and can be injured by the actions of Sins, demons and other lost souls. Even their wings can be mutilated and outright removed if the being is strong enough. The loss of wings is severely emotionally damaging to angels. Damages they receive will eventually repair in time, but physical injuries can remain for an extended time if they suffer any lingering psychological damage.

Former, Fallen and Redeemed Angels[]

Many of the original angels God created rebelled against her authority and were cast into Hell, becoming Demons. Many of them, including their leader, The Devil, are given free reign to act in Hell and on Earth to torment the damned and corrupt and lead astray the living. They take great joy in turning God's children away from her. God will continue to force them to live outside of Heaven for as long as they rebel against her.

Former angels may ask for and receive forgiveness from God if they're sincere in their contrition, but as part of their punishment and road to redemption, they are forbidden from entering Heaven until all other beings have gone in first. Most of them serve as angels in Purgatory and work with Heavenly angels in convincing those living in Limbo to retry life. Although they can't enter Heaven, they remain in God's grace.
